KEA Nests
KEA nests are special spots around New Zealand that we have discovered that provide a place for KEA guests in a certified self-contained vehicle to freedom camp overnight.
Clifton Road Reserve, Hawkes Bay
The Clifton Road Reserve provides beach-front freedom camping at its finest. Located in the sunny Hawked Bay, camping in in this spot is restricted, but open to KEA guests and their certified self contained vehicles. It is an amazing area, close to the Te Awanga cliffs and Cape Kidnappers.
It is also just across the road from the Elephant Hill winery estate and restaurant. KEA guests are offered a free wine tasting when they book in for a meal at the fabulous restaurant.

If you are traveling through the Waikato, there is a wonderful spot right on the banks of Lake Karapiro, which allows freedom camping for KEA’s self-contained vehicles. It is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the beauty of the lake, sheltered by the trees. Lake Karapiro is known as a hub for rowing in the North Island, with events often being held here.
There are also excellent bushwalks through native trees.
If you’re looking to explore the lake further, then Karapiro Cruisers offer KEA guests a $10 discount off a one hour scenic cruise. You can admire the peaceful scenery while enjoying a nice lunch onboard. For more information visit: http://www.karapirocruiser.co.nz
Tarawera Café
Situated halfway between Taupo and Napier on State Highway 5 is the Tarawera Café, a rustic kiwi establishment that offers free overnight parking to KEA guests. Within a short walking distance of the grounds are the historic hot pools, as well as lots of little known spots for fishing and bush walks.
